Buying Refurbished Computers And Laptops?

Posted by Team Recompute on 7th Apr 2020

Smartphones come with greater processing power and functions than ever before. You might wonder if you even need a computer now.

There are still some tasks that computers perform better than phones. Working from home is still much easier on a desktop computer or laptop.

They're not cheap. The average computer has cost around $700 since 2016.

You might wonder if you should pick up a refurbished computer instead. Is it worth buying secondhand computers? Read on to learn more.

What Does the Refurbishment Process Look Like?

Secondhand computers are exactly what they sound like. Owners sell their computers back to the manufacturer or to refurbishers.

These companies take the machines apart and look for signs of damage. They replace worn or damaged components and fix loose connections.

Battery functions and the power supply come under inspection. The latter is easy to replace.

The team will also check various components. That includes the hard drive, graphics card, and RAM.

They'll wipe any data and install a new operating system. Tests make sure the machine is good enough to sell.

Check that the seller follows this process. If they do, you can be sure the refurbished machine is in good working order when you buy it.

Are There Downsides to Refurbished Computers?

You're unlikely to find the latest generation computers as refurb options. You'll need to look at older models. Depending on what you need the computer for, this may not be an issue.

Remember that if you get 2-3 years out of a computer, the refurbished machine you choose may already be 2 or 3 years old.

In the case of laptops, that gives you reduced battery life. As laptops age, they can't hold a full charge.

Why Should I Buy Secondhand Computers?

The best reason is that it saves money. You can often afford higher-spec models because they're older and refurbished.

Want to buy name-brand computers? Refurbished models are a great way to get them cheaper without sacrificing quality.

Dell, HP, and Apple call sign their names to refurbished models from their product lines. They have high standards for anyone wanting to refurbish their computers.

A refurbished desktop computer is also better for the environment. It means less plastic will make its way to landfills, and fewer minerals need to be mined to make its components.

Even Australia’s Department of Defence wiped and refurbished over 110,000 PCs to save sending them to landfill.

Anything Else I Need to Know?

Check if the seller offers a one-year warranty. This tells you the seller is guaranteeing the product is good for at least 12 months.

Make sure there's a return policy so you have time to take it home and try it out.

While many refurbishers will carry out cosmetic fixes, check for scratches or dings. These won't always affect its operating capabilities. They can look ugly if you're giving the machine as a gift.

These cosmetic problems can also be a sign the refurbishment wasn't done properly. If that hard drive sounds loud, or your laptop screen hinge squeals, take it back.

Otherwise, have fun choosing a 'new' secondhand computer!

Which Computer Will You Choose?

You'll have more choice when you turn to secondhand computers since the prices are more reasonable. Don't mistake 'cheap' for 'poor quality'. These are brand-name computers at affordable prices.

Consider choosing higher specifications than you think you need. Always test out the computer as soon as you can to check everything is in working order.

Then enjoy your 'new' purchase and amazing savings.
