How to Create a Home Theater Room the Entire Family Will Enjoy

Posted by Team Recompute on 11th May 2021

One of the best investments you can make when building a home is to add a home theater room. Today, 4 out of every 5 upscale homes have some sort of home theater room.

This is because a well-designed home theater can add value to your home. The keyword here is well-designed, though. A home theater that isn't quite up to scratch won't do anything for your home's value.

Money isn't the only reason to build a theater, though. Many people build them because of the joy it could bring themselves and their families.

Either way, when building a home theater room, it's best to build it right. We'll offer some tips on that in this article.

Room Shape

Believe it or not, the  shape of the room can make a huge difference in the quality of a media room. The reason for this has to do with acoustics.

Rectangular rooms are much better at carrying sounds than square or circular rooms. In fact, there is something in music known as the golden ratio. It states that the width should be 1.6 times the height of the room and that the length should be 2.33 times the height.

This has to do with how sound reflects off the walls of a room. Sound needs enough time to travel before hitting another wall. Otherwise, you get something known as flutter echo.

Flutter echo is when the same sound echoes rapidly for a certain length of time. This doesn't matter in larger rooms because the sound has enough space that it isn't getting caught between walls and constantly bouncing back and forth between them.

Light and Sound Control

You don't want to disturb the rest of the house when you're watching movies, nor do you want any glare on your TV. This is why it's important to control light and sound in your theater.

We've already discussed room shape and how that plays into acoustics, but what about sound cancellation? How do you make sure the noise from your theater stays in your theater?

The best way is to install soundproofing, which can take the form of many materials. If you're building from the ground up, you might try using dense insulation, such as R11.

You can also use common acoustic materials, such as acoustic foam, acoustic drywall, cork, and even wood with holes drilled into it.

For lighting, you'll need to block out any glare that might get on the TV.

There are a few ways to do this. You might even put in LED lights, which some say reduce glare and are better for the environment.

You should also block out windows if you have them. Not only can they cause glare, but they interfere with the sound as well.
