The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is a strong choice for students, professionals and mobile users who want a lightweight Windows device that can function as both a tablet and a laptop.

Its sharp 12.3-inch PixelSense touchscreen is excellent for documents, web browsing, presentations and handwritten notes with an optional Surface Pen. The included keyboard makes this configuration more useful and better value than buying the tablet by itself.

The main limitations are lack of Thunderbolt and reduced stability when used on your lap compared with a traditional laptop.

Two-in-One Design

The Surface Pro 7 is different from a conventional laptop. Its main computer is built into the tablet, with an adjustable kickstand at the back and a detachable keyboard that connects along the bottom edge.

This design allows it to operate in several ways:

• As a conventional laptop with the keyboard attached

• As a touchscreen tablet

• With the kickstand for presentations or video

• With an optional Surface Pen for handwriting and drawing

At approximately 775g without the keyboard, the Surface Pro 7 is considerably lighter than most traditional laptops. Even with the keyboard attached, it remains easy to carry between home, work, university and meetings.

The kickstand works well on a desk or table. However, it requires more space and is less stable when used directly on your lap than a traditional clamshell laptop.

Processor Performance

The Intel Core i5-1035G4 is a 10th-generation processor with four cores and eight threads. It reaches speeds of up to 3.7GHz and provides capable performance for common business, study and home applications.

The installed 16GB of RAM is one of the strongest features of this configuration.

The 12.3-inch PixelSense display is one of the Surface Pro 7’s strongest features. Its resolution of 2736 × 1824 produces sharp text, detailed images and a clear viewing experience.

The 3:2 aspect ratio provides more vertical space than a traditional widescreen display. This is particularly useful when:

• Reading documents

• Browsing websites

• Viewing PDFs

• Writing assignments

The display supports 10-point multi-touch, allowing users to scroll, zoom and navigate directly on the screen.

Surface Pen Support

The Surface Pro 7 supports the optional Surface Pen, making it useful for:

Because it is thinner than a conventional laptop keyboard, it may feel slightly more flexible when typing. However, it remains comfortable for general work and study.

• An 8-megapixel rear autofocus camera with Full HD video

The front camera is well positioned for video meetings when the Surface is resting on its kickstand. Windows Hello also allows users to sign in using facial recognition.

The rear camera can be useful for photographing documents, whiteboards and classroom material.

The combination of USB-C and USB-A allows users to connect both modern and traditional accessories without immediately requiring an adapter.

However, the USB-C port does not support Thunderbolt. Users who require Thunderbolt docks, external graphics or the fastest Thunderbolt storage should consider a newer Surface model.

External monitors and compatible docks can still be connected through USB-C or Microsoft’s Surface Connect port.

Graphics Performance

Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics can handle everyday visual tasks, video streaming, presentations and light creative work.

They are suitable for:

The Surface Pro 7 does not contain a dedicated graphics card. It is not designed for demanding modern gaming, advanced 3D modelling, complex CAD or professional video rendering.

Battery Considerations

When new, Microsoft rated the Surface Pro 7 for up to 10.5 hours of typical use under controlled testing conditions.

Actual runtime on a refurbished Surface will depend on battery condition, screen brightness, applications, wireless use and power settings. Video meetings and high display brightness will generally use more power than document work.

As with any refurbished device, buyers should not expect the same maximum battery runtime originally advertised when it was new.
