What Does Buying a Refurbished Computer Do for the Environment?

A refurbished computer isn't just something that can save you a little bit of money. The environmental impact of refurbished electronics is massive, and it's something worth factoring into your next purchase of a device.

We're going to explore some of the environmental impacts of refurbished computers today, giving you a little insight into how they benefit the earth in comparison to new options.

The benefits discussed below apply not only to refurbished laptops but to all refurbished electronics in general. Let's take a look.

The Eco-Benefit of Buying a Refurbished Computer

The first thing to note is that many of the components involved in laptops are precious metals, harvested at great cost to the environment. From the process of mining, shaping, producing, all the way to the transport of devices, there's environmental impact all along the way.

It's important to appreciate the size and breadth that the supply chain constitutes. There are ports, vehicles, and energy used all the way from wherever you are to almost every continent in the world.

Those factors exist with most devices that you use, including the device you're using to read this. You'd be hard-pressed to find an electronic device that wasn't at least partially sourced from three or more countries.

Demand for Production

As we fiend for more and more products, manufacturers keep producing them. All of that production has a constant impact on the environment. Considering there are billions of people in the world, roughly half of which owning and operating smart devices, that's a lot of production.

The trouble is that we don't need new devices. There's a surplus of devices that are left to sit and collect dust even though they work fine. Companies know that producing new products will bring in more money, even if the last rendition is still working.

Many products are crafted with what's called "planned obsoletion." This is just a term that refers to products that are made to go bad or get buggy before they need to.

When they shut down, it's time for the consumer to make another purchase.

Investing in refurbished devices allows you to put a fork in that process. The refurbished computer is good as new, if only with a couple of knicks and scratches from the previous user.

That said, they have good lifespans and function just as well as brand new one might. When you do that, you save innumerable pounds of carbon dioxide from entering into the air.

You also reduce demand for unnecessary production and make a small shift to the way things are. Technology is a big contributor to climate change, and shifting the way we perceive and use old technology is an important piece to consider.
