The Sustainable Office: 4 Ways to Make a More Eco-Friendly Office

Posted by Team Recompute on 15th Jun 2021

It's no secret that humans are failing to take care of the planet. Between the number of greenhouse gases we produce, the volume of forests we destroy, and the amount of waste we create, something needs to change.

But what can you do as a small business owner? You may not think that you can make a big difference, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

In reality, every effort you make to create a more sustainable office has a positive impact on the planet. It also creates a domino effect with your employees.

We're here to give you a few pointers. Keep reading for a quick guide on how to establish an eco-friendly office.

Cut Down on Paper

The modern business world is run digitally. Use this to your benefit to go paperless and create a sustainable business.

Instead of printing off memos, send emails. Instead of having clients sign physical contracts, send them electronic documents and use digital signatures. For most scenarios, there's not really a need for paper in the business world anymore.

Use Refurbished Technology

Next, think about the technology you use throughout the workplace. Modern offices, as noted earlier, are digital. This requires a full supply of computers.

Instead of buying all-new products, think about sustainability for IT. Buy refurbished computers, laptops, printers, and copiers. Not only does this bring you one step closer to a sustainable office, but it also helps you save money.

Invest in LED Lights

Did you know that LED lights can last 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs? Furthermore, they use far less energy while turned on.

The majority of energy created by incandescent light bulbs is in the form of heat, not light. Therefore, when using incandescent light bulbs, you're burning far more energy than necessary. LED lights last longer and use less electricity to illuminate your office.

Ditch One-Use Items

Did you know that nearly 10 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year? Getting rid of one-use paper and plastic items is one of the most important factors in a sustainable office design. These include things like paper cups, plastic cups, plastic utensils, paper and styrofoam plates, etc.

Conversely, encourage your employees to bring in their own refillable water bottles to implement some sustainability in the workplace ideas. You can also invest in re-useable dishes, cups, and utensils in the breakroom.

Set Up Recycle Bins

Finally, make it easier for your employees to embrace a sustainable office by giving them the tools they need to succeed. For example, set up a set of labeled recycle bins in the breakroom and kitchen so employees can easily recycle their garbage. You should have a recycle bin for plastic, metal, and paper.

This is a small step to take towards a sustainable workplace, but it makes a big difference.

Want to Create a Sustainable Office?

If becoming more environmentally friendly is important for you and your business, start implementing the ideas listed above. Every business owner that makes an effort to establish a sustainable office is part of the bigger picture of change.

And remember, you don't have to do everything at once. Start slowly to make sure your employees (and budget) can keep up with the changes.  And if you're looking for ways to be eco-friendly with your IT, check out some of our high-quality refurbished computers.
