5 Pieces of Advice for Buying a Server Second Hand

Posted by Team Recompute on 15th Sep 2020

New server hardware is expensive and often you buy more than needed. There should be a cheaper alternative to buying expensive equipment. Thankfully, when buying a server, there is!

Refurbished servers are available for sale by retailers both online and brick and mortar stores. Read on for five tips on buying a second-hand server.

1. Buy Certified

Always make sure you buy from a certified manufacturer or reseller. When you buy a used server from a certified manufacturer or reseller you are getting parts and paperwork that you wouldn't get from buying it on eBay or other places. Buying certified nets you support. Buying certified buys you peace of mind.

2. Get a Warranty When Buying a Server

When you buy a used server one of the most important things you need is a warranty. The ideal is for the warranty to be the same as if you were buying new. Some manufacturers offer an extended warranty for an extra price, so be sure to keep on the lookout for that.

3. If You Find a Deal, Grab It

When you find refurbished servers for cheap, be sure to grab it! Refurbished servers are already cheaper than new ones, but when you find those deals they will go fast. In some cases, you could get two servers for less than a new one!

Deal shopping is a hit-or-miss effort. If you are a careful shopper, you could score big. Keep your eyes out for great deals!

4. Know What You Are Buying

Remember, some deals only look good. It's best to go in with the knowledge of what you need. Know what manufacturers make what hardware and what the current prices on the equipment are.

If you know what the current hardware goes for, it'll be easier to tell if that eBay deal that you can't pass up is all that great. This is part of the reason you should stick to certified manufacturers and resellers.

Tip Your Server

There's nothing inherently risky in buying a server from a certified reseller, but it never hurts to be cautious. Know what you're buying, and get a warranty, and it'll be well worth the investment.
