What to Look for When Buying a Refurbished iPhone

Posted by Team Recompute on 9th Sep 2019

Brand new phones can be extremely expensive. If you aren't a person who needs the latest gadget, it's smart to consider buying a refurbished iPhone. It's good for the environment, too.

Refurbished phones can be hit or miss, though, and it's important to know what you're getting when you buy one. There are a number of boxes to check when considering a seller as well as a specific phone.

So, take some notes and get better prepared for your next iPhone purchase!

Guide to Purchasing a Refurbished iPhone

So, you've spotted the perfect phone for yourself! Great price, right model, no scratches or cracks.

Before you close the deal, take a look at the following:

1. The Reputation of the Seller

Buying from a reputable seller is the first piece of the puzzle. It's not too hard to make an iPhone look like it's in good condition, and a lot of the issues these devices face are internal.

Check reviews from the seller and see what everyone is saying. There are bound to be a few bad reviews about any seller, but make sure that the majority of reviews are positive.

Overwhelmingly bad reviews are a sign that the seller is trying to skim its customers, and you don't want to fall for their tricks.

2. Whether or Not It's Unlocked

If a phone isn't unlocked before you buy it, it will be locked into a particular network. Not only that, but you may have old data from the previous owner in the memory.

Make sure it's unlocked so you can pick and choose your wireless plans. If it's still locked after you buy it, you can consult with the network to see if they'll unlock the phone after a small fee. You shouldn't have to pay this fee, but you will if you've already purchased a locked phone.

3. The State of the Battery

It's tough to tell the state of an iPhone's battery until you've used it for a charge cycle or two. That is unless you go to settings, tap battery, then battery health.

Once you get to the battery health screen, check to see the percentage of the "maximum capacity." A new phone will have a maximum capacity of 100 percent and go down from there.

4. Get a Warranty

Many refurbished devices can come with a warranty. If you have the option to get a warranty, you should. While you can check a number of things, some issues can go unnoticed at first glance.

You wouldn't want to notice a critical flaw in the device and be stuck without a warranty. If you aren't offered a warranty, it may be a good idea to check another seller.

5. Is the Price on Par With Other Products?

Make sure that the price you're paying is similar to the price of the same product on different sites. Most generations of iPhone have a clear value across the board, and you should stick to products in that general price range.

Phones out of the box or hardly used may be an exception, but be careful not to pay too much!
