Your Guide to Setting Up Windows Without a Microsoft Account

Posted by Team Recompute on 20th Jul 2020

Did you know that over 400 million devices are now functioning through Windows 10? And while you may want to be a part of this vast percentage, there may be some restrictions holding you back from getting Windows set up.

Let's take your Microsoft account for example. If you don't have an account, it can be difficult to set up a Windows on your device.

If you need to set up Windows but don't have a Microsoft account and don't know how to make one, no worries. Here are some steps on how to use a local account for Windows.

Disconnect From WiFi

In order to successfully set up Windows on your computer with no Microsoft account, the first step you need to take is disconnecting your device from the internet. Whether you decide to switch your device to airplane mode or disconnect the Ethernet cable, both options would work.

Another option would be unplugging your router. When the "Something went wrong" message populates, press skip to begin set up.

What Name Do You Want to Use?

Your screen will now prompt you to make a username. "Who's going to use this PC?" will appear on your screen and you will be prompted to make an offline account and sign into Windows.

For Windows Pro

If you are trying to set up Windows for a professional account, you can do so by selecting Domain join. This is normally located on the bottom left corner of the screen on Windows 10.

If you don't see this option while trying to set up Windows, you are able to perform the former option of disconnecting your device from WiFi connection and starting over this way.

Create a "Dummy" Account

If shutting off the internet on your device doesn't work, you are still able to create a local account.

During the setup process, create a Microsoft account by selecting "Account" under the "Settings" tab. Next, click on the "Your Info" option located on the top of the Account menu. Then press "Sign in with a local account instead."

Windows 10 will then give you the step-by-step process on how you are able to switch to a local user account.

Once this process is completed, you are able to delete your dummy account and begin using Windows 10 via your local account.
